You can find the total memory recognised by Windows without installing an app or changing any settings. You can also see how much is currently in use.

What you need

A PC running Windows 11 and access to your normal desktop session. These steps are read-only and can be repeated at any time.

Check installed RAM in Settings

  1. Open Start, then Settings. The keyboard shortcut Windows key + I also opens Settings.
  2. Select System in the left navigation.
  3. Scroll to About and open it.
  4. Under Device specifications, find Installed RAM. This is the amount Windows detects, not the amount currently free.

If you recently fitted new memory and this number is lower than expected, restart once and check again. If it remains wrong, check the motherboard or computer manual before opening the case.

Check current memory use

  1. Right-click Start and open Task Manager.
  2. Select Performance, then Memory.
  3. Read the total capacity and current use. You may also see speed and slot information, depending on the hardware and firmware.

Memory use changes as programs open and close. A high figure by itself does not prove there is a problem. If the computer slows down when you switch between applications, compare memory use while the slowdown is happening.

Expected result and next step

You should now know the installed capacity and whether it is close to full during normal work. What is RAM? explains what the number means. If you decide to upgrade a desktop, confirm compatibility before following the installation guide.

Reversal

There is nothing to undo: this guide only opens information panels and does not change the computer.
